I've never used my own personal site(s) as a way to generate revenue for myself, but I wondered is it worth it? What types of sites normally turn a profit, and what type of income, or outcome, can I expect? I'm not one for whoring out my site with bombardments of ads so what do you suppose the best approach be?

The answer depends on what kind of site we are talking about (yours in particular or any one particular site), and what kind of traffic you get or intend to get. It also depends on how much money the users of your site have, and how much spending power they have and are willing to part with. If you're looking for a generic answer, Yahoo ads, Azoogle ads, etc... tend to do better than Google ads. But that's all going to be small if you are talking about >1000 users a day. Maybe $25-50 a month or less for 1000 users.

I have two sites that I run right now, a jokes site, and a myspace resource site. My jokes site makes next to nothing, and my myspace site makes a little bit more than nothing.

Its probably because they both get less than 1000 uniques a day and I don't promote them at all, except through banner exchanges.

I've made $50 off google adsense for both combined in the past 3 years.

That's no good... I think we made about $300 a month off this site when it was around 8000 users a day back when I had both adsense and yahoo ads on there. Since then we've removed the adsense so it's difficult to guess what it would be now that we are closer to 13-15k a day or so.

How do you handle the policy of Yahoo RSnake? I read someplace that they won't allow ads on hacking sites etc. And does Google alows you this also?

Meh, I've never been a big stickler about rules and terms of service. Both Google and Yahoo employees read my site so it's not exactly like I'm hiding it or anything. I think they just have bigger fish to fry than my few hundred a month (and way less than that in Adsense since I've almost completely gotten rid of it from the site since it converts way worse than Yahoo).

That's kinda true. I signed up for adwords, I'm going to see what it can deliver except slower pageloading :)

Adwords was making me about 1/2 what Yahoo ads were. That's why I ended up putting them at the bottom and then eventually getting rid of them altogether. If you're interested in money, go with someone who pays better, like Yahoo or azoogle.

Yep that's a good idea, but I found out that yahoo requires a SSN from the U.S. so i quited the signup at that point cause i'm from the Netherlands. I'll go check azgoogle in a minute.

BTW those javascript errors in Google's ads are horrible.....

It all depends on what services you are offering what is the target market for your business....and if you have a web site than we can optimize that one so that it will generate leads for your business.
