Google url text...

I use Mozilla, probably for all the wrong reasons, which has it's own little integrated google search box beside the url-box.

During a search for guinea pig rescues I learned two things, first that some rescues have a surprisingly high adoption fee and that the url changed from "google.com" when I entered my search.

The first using google.com was this:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=guinea+pig+rescue&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

However, when I used the one embedded in Mozilla I was shown this:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=guinea+pig+rescue&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a

I'm a curious being so after using the search box integrated in mozilla I searched the same thing again on googles actual page and I got a long winded:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=3Jx&q=guinea+pig+rescue&btnG=Search&meta=

Why is this? Why does google have to know that firefox is being used to search? Can this information be used in a way that would upset me?

You can remove that just need to edit some files, what I did. Unfortunately gets overwritten on update. I'm guessing you can have modifyheaders extension strip that string out of the URL. Not sure though.

I get the same thing using Internet Explorer, but it's raped by both Microsoft, and H.P. When I search for things it inserts Microsoft.com in a paramter in the query, and when I first visit Google it actually requests a promotional page with a small bit of information about my computer. Other than that I read on a site that did a study that Google will serve you different results based upon your browser as well.

@rsnake - the blog you linked me to is interesting since this year I have written two comparison "essays" [err, apparently they're really "lap reports"] on why Google is more successful than Yahoo! in the UK/USA and a comparison essay on Google versus the search engine Kartoo. I remember using the word "Trustworthy" a lot - now it all comes to bite me in the ass.

That Mozilla makes a lot of money (from bedford's link), does that stop any of you from using the lil-Mozilla search box?

I never _ever_ use Google to search unless it's for testing. I've turned off everything I possibly can in the browser that points to Google (safe browsing, removed all the search boxes, the links to Google for typod URLs, etc...). So to answer you, yes, everything stops me. Some people think that would be inconvenient. I think of it as diversifying my risk. :)
