As someone who does not yet own a smart phone, what risks are unique to browsing the web through one of these devices?

The same as any other web enabled device. If someone out there is bored enough and malicious enough, they could very well write code to affect the device adversely.

So no, surfing your warez sites is not safer with your phone. :)

Warez? Who wastes their time on that with some many "human anatomy" sites available?

lat,
there are antivirus applications for mobile devices as well. just have to do a search based off the OS version of your phone. I'm not sure how well the AV works as I generally only go online to check for updates and whatnot.

What about the different smart phones out there -- are their different security strengths and weaknesses?

I've held off getting a smart phone for several reasons, and it would seem smart to research security as well.
