A little while back (probably about six months ago) I looked at the hosted Radius service offered by http://WirelessSecurityCorp.com, and I thought it was going to be very useful, but I didn't do anything about it at the time.

over the past couple of weeks I've been repeatedly attempting to raise WirelessSecurityCorp.com but it always returns "The connection has timed out".

Wireless Security Corp is listed as owned by McAfee, but fourteen e-mails to fourteen different contacts listed at the McAfee site have all been ignored -- not one single reply received. What a wonderfully customer-centric company!

Anyway...

(1) Does anyone know anything about what's happened to Wireless Security Corp?

(2) Any recommendations for a hosted Radius service that can be used by very small businesses and even individuals to improve the security of their wireless Routers? Affordability and ease of setup would of course be important to such people.

Most grateful for any assistance/recommendations.

Hosted anything is a bad idea, mail, dns, authentication, etc..

My recommendation would be to hire someone to come in and set it up for you in-house. The initial cost might be higher, however, in the long run you'll be way better off.

Absolutely. I agree 100%.

Since it is on topic... I know of a excellent Information Security consulting firm that works for a few small local businesses, and has worked in Information Security departments more then one Fortune 150 companies. I disagree, I think hosted services are a fine business decision for most small businesses. Doing things in house, while *possibly* more secure, is going to quite often be botched by in-house personnel, and small business owners are ill prepared to judge most consultant's abilities to secure them.

Yes it's ironic that's exactly what I do, but when I go into many of my clients, it is consultants they have hired in the past that left them insecure. Even a complete shit hosting provider like Rackspace is going to do a better job securing most services than your average small business can handle. And that doesn't even take into consideration self hosting costs which are a major factor for small businesses.

That said, I don't see the point for a very small business or individuals to use RADIUS for wireless access...I doesn't improve the security, it improves the management.

I hate to seem like I slip-flopped but I should have been more specific.

I do believe in hosting, when
A - you need something like an actual data center with redundant links and power blah blah blah,...
B - you need multiple locations for redundancy (think DNS)

but not otherwise,
especially something delicate/security related like radius.

I am a fan of the "if you want something done right, you have to do it your self" train of thought. As such I host everything myself.

For a small business I would recommend having a Security Professional, build the network/servers on the company's property, and get a 1 or 2 year service contract with all the work. Done correctly you guys know how easy things can be to maintain once deployed. It is my belief that this would be ideal for a small business and a small consulting firm, such as http://AandRTech.com ;)

i tend to agree with id on this one. altough i'd prefer to see my infrastructure services ran inhouse, i prefer knowing them hosted with someone i can trust (or make liable like hell) if i can not reasonable have the skills to admin them, or the infrastructure to host the boxen. (seriously, a 42U in a small office floorspace ?)

managing things fully in house are difficult, it ask a lot of varying skills in your personnel (admin of course, but electrician, cooling specialist, physical security, etc, etc...) and the cost of running would be prohibitive for systems that are probably not even business related.

as for Rosie-L's question, i'd say find a good security team, take a pair of dedicated servers at a decent ISP, get a SLA on it, and you'll be rolling
