Anonymous Emailers (WEB) Seriously?

Curious, there are numerous web-sites and systems available online that supposedly send "anonymous" email messages to a desired recipient. However, many of these use third-party systems such as cypherpunk, mixminion, ETC.

I'm curious, is it actually possible to create a 100% anonymous emailer? Would it require you to setup a server in .se or another country that has strict privacy guidelines in favor of the "user."

Essentially, if you send a message through a server's SMTP that isn't logging, would it be anonymous? If you were to setup an anonymous mailing script online, how would you make it anonymous, if its even possible.

I don't think there is a perfect privacy/anonymity.
Even admins from proxy servers have to give their logs when law enforcement agencies request.
There are several ways to track down an anonymous email though it may require some time and effort.

get a free *nix
change your mac addr
put on big fake nose and glasses
go to net cafe (or close to one)
telnet to the mail server of where you want to send the mail on port 25
blah blah

ta, da, easiest way to send the ransom message.

The problem with your idea is that the remote machine logs who connected to it. Only way to make that truly anon is to hack a box somewhere else and use it for relay. And that still risks detection of where you're coming from to connect to it, hence the above.

In practice though you could probably get away with it by just not logging and, as you suggest, putting it in a country that wouldn't investigate complaints.

Anonymous web remailers aren't 100% anonymous, and many are actually fed-run honeypots. You can never be 100% anonymous, but you can come fairly close. Here's how:
1) Get a good OS (e.g. OpenBSD)
1a) Make sure you have encrypted swap
2) Change your mac address (ifconfig bce0 lladr 00:00:00:00:00:00 (replace bce0 with your connection interface and 00::00 with the mac address you want)
3) Connect to a wireless connection point. (You'll probably want to impersonate a paying customer if it's a pay one, see "Never Pay for WiFi Again" 2600 23:3)
4) Use Tor (
5) Use Mixminion ( with Tor (google it)
6) Make sure you aren't being watched
