Wow, talk about a good compression ratio (if you know what you're talking about), what program did you use to decompress the file?

Seems a tad strange :) If anyone could do that, he's got gold in hands.
Maybe it only made a reference, or some image to the actual file someplace else.

meh, ive seen this stuff before, great piece of software, though i don't remember the name. Perhaps the file extension might provide some more assistance. could you post it?

I've seen some pretty crazy compression of specific formats. Text is usally compressed easily. But that just seems silly.

I dunno if this is what you're talking about: http://kgbarchiver.net/ but while it doesn't claim anything *too* excessive on its website, I've seen a lot of bullshit claims out there as to what it can do.

The only way that could happen if is the text consisted of a very low number of characters, eg all a's.

Most likely it was just a reference, I even have a sneaking suspicion the 561 KiloByte file was a .torrrent :p

Well, there is some bomb gzipped files, maybe it's one of them :O (~10KB to download and 100GB when it's unzipped)
But frankly, depending on your file, it's possible...

Can't be true, for real.

No compression algorithm can do this type of huge compression. If some claim they can, they lie and probably make use of hidden partitions or system storage making reference to the file as an image. Would be cool though; putting 50.000 DVD's on a USB stick. But if anyone can do this, and yeah I mean compressing a whole DVD losless to 561Kb, give me a call.

Compression is totally dependent on the data, if you have a billion "a"s in a file you can compress that to "a"x10^9, pretty good compression eh?

However compress a video stream in which each frame is made up of 307200 pixels x 3 colors for each pixel (typical for a 640x480 video), which changes every frame, and there isn't a whole lot of room for compression past what the video codec has already done.

Could it be using NTFS ADS? That way it would actually take the full 5gb of hdd space but only appear to take the space of it's container file.

Yes I saw them I know that it can be done, that's not what I meant to comment on, such files are full of the same crap about 5 million times a single alphabet letter. It's not real information that's been compressed. Thought that was the question.
