How does Google protect it's data centers?
Posted by: christ1an

Well, this might be a kinda strange question but while taking a shower a few minutes ago, I started wondering how Google protects it's data centers against physical attacks such as nukes, emps and so on.

Does anyone have information on this?

Regards,

Yes but I've read that some datacenters are in fact protected against nukes.
If I was a terrorist who wanted to change the world, I'd throw a nuke on a google datacenter.

Too many of them, if I wanted to take out a large portion of the net I'd hit one of the big net exchanges. There's a building in LA that could take out a good portion of the west coast, and you wouldn't need a nuke. Probably one in San Jose as well, though I don't know it's exact location.

Hell, just snip a few trans-atlantic links and at minimum you've heavily reduced the speed at which the Internet works. If you shut off all the links to Florida you'd probably drop spam by half! ;)

How does google protect itself?

I don't think they need to. I'm sure terrorists use google to find all sorts of things:

"How to fly planes"

"How to glue velcro to bombs"

"Donkeys XXX free nude"

Stuff along those lines.

Does googling this make me a terrorist?

No, it makes you more employable in South America. Searching for Camels in acts of Human-to-Animal Erotica (Beastiality), would make you a terrorist.

I though that every country had it's own Google datacenter? I saw some chart a few years back.

If you can create a relatively high voltage accessory, and place it in close proximity to the cables in a parallel fashion the magnetic field may be great enough to cause a large amount of interference. This is generally the case with most electrical apparatus like standard 120 (110, or for Europeans 208/277) voltage and CAT5 low-voltage wiring. I've run CAT6 on several occasions, and I'm told it's uneffected by the standard voltages (atleast up to 277). Then again if you clipped the cables they may have to run completely new wire, which would be quite a large chunk of cash, because from what I've been told you cannot splice communication wire, and crimping RJ45 ends on it to try and fix it will cause interference.

transatlantic cables will be fiber, they can be spliced, take out a meet me room in a major hub and it will take months to rebuild the infrastructure.

I have a cage within EQX in Ashburn, VA and Google has an enormous cage, hell I think I even photos of it, including the Google sign they have pinned to the fucking cage fencing.

My cage is a few cages away, next to a yahoo multiplexer, dicks... and their bad ass equipment, makes my Juniper M160s look like toys..

If anything you'd cost them a fortune if you continually cut up their fiber optic cables. I guess the only other option is to modify the transformer they use to power their equipment to output a higher voltage than required as it'll cause it to run at a higher rate before it simply explodes, and bursts into flames. I've actually seen this happen before on another costly commercial appliance, and it was totally badass.

You know.. I know I'm going to date myself with this next statement, but I really hate how you people have screwed up my internet. I remember the good old days when I could just send a couple ICMP UNREACHs to the EFNET uplink for all of Finland, and I could make that entire country disappear.. for at least a while.. now, I have to cut fiber to achieve the same effect? sheesh!

I didn't have anything against Finland, they were just some nice servers where I could load up a couple hundred MCB's and do mass nick collisions while I was taking over some random channel...

@WhiteAcid

umm.. wait.. now that I remember, maybe it wasn't me.. ;)

It's a reasonable proposal. A reasonable proposal that he's reasonably proposing.
