Canadian coins containing tiny transmitters were found in the pockets of at least three US defense industry workers who visited Canada in recent years, the Defense Department is warning contractors.

"On at least three separate occasions between October 2005 and January 2006, cleared defense contractors' employees traveling through Canada have discovered radio frequency transmitters embedded in Canadian coins placed on their persons," the US Defense Security Service said in an unclassified report on its website.

I wonder if it was Canada or some other country that was doing the spying. Interesting.

Seems like a terrible way to go about spying, I mean, what if they wanted a coffee? Now you're tracking a 17 year old kid from starbucks.

Yeah indeed, but still it's cool that these "movie" things do happen. I guess they could place a coin somewhere on a desk or drawer, I wonder how they overcome the "faraday cage" limitation, or are those coins non metal? I don't know.

Anything that size probably can't transmit very far, odds are if they were being tracked it is with sensors embedded in door frames, or something similar. Perhaps in metal detectors at airports, etc.
