So I finally clicked on one of the ads on this site because it looked halfway interesting and the tag line was "Daemon, a techno-thriller - The modern world is about ot get pwned..." yes pwned. The link brought me to this book site. http://www.thedaemon.com/

Four chapters are available online, which is nice and the way I would like to see all books sold. But what can I say, they lost me in the first chapter...

"How can you say you have no idea where the traffic is coming from? Just use a packet sniffer."

Great! I like that, it's the correct answer...but

"That is what I am saying, Jon: the source of the traffic is being masked somehow"

Ok, so the traffic here could be spoofed, you can still see the mac address, or if that is spoofed as well you can see where on the network the traffic is coming from, to the port level on a switch...argh.

"Try a passive sniffer"

"It's invisible to both active AND passive sniffers"

The author obviously has no idea what he is talking about here, take ten seconds to ask a network or security guy? I mean this is the setup for the whole novel, sure have a mistake here or there later, but in the first chapter you are selling the book to the readers!

I quit reading at the end of the first chapter, if anyone reads further please post a review.

Has anyone found a good techno-thriller type book that is both technically correct (or at least close) and a good read as well? The two seem to be mutually exclusive...someday I shall write a book, and bore you all.

Hehe. I clicked the same add, got bored slightly quicker, can't remember why.

And no, I haven't found a book you describe, but then I haven't looked too hard either.

PDF constantly sucks on this computer for some reason so I probably haven't read it. And because this company has a professional version I can't upgrade it because I don't have the CD, not that I think that would help, something else weird is going on. As a result if it's PDF I generally don't read it unless I really have to. :(

Yup, I sort of enjoyed that, but don't care for the writing style, too literal which distracts from the story. The target audience is hackers who already know the tools, and other readers are going to be put off by the overly technical descriptions.

The Motif xwindow made me laugh though...come on Fyodor use a window styled with gtk or something...anything else...

rsnake: assuming you have administrator rights to change file associations.. use foxitreader for pdf's .. loads way faster n way less of a memory hog than Adobe. maybe if there was a way to remove all the plug-ins that Adobe loads it would be useable - haven't bothered to try.
