Why are people dumb?

The local news in my area ran a story the other night about a gov't office of another county. I can't remember for the life of me what office it was. The story was about personal information that was being displayed for the entire world to see on their website. I know that this issue is nothing new. Hell, a while back you get on the attorney general's site and get about a million different socials and business tax ids. What was really disturbing about this story was the fact that their office had been notified to take down all of the existing documents, black out all personal info, rescan them and post them back up on the site. A year passed and they still had thousands of people's socials up on the web. They had the manager for the office on for an interview and her reaction was, "Oh, well you can't expect us to get them all. I suppose we'll have to do better next time." Really? I guess that I'm just getting tired of my government giving the bad guys the keys to the castle.

I agree... it's painful. That's partially what Bush's huge security budget is going towards, btw. They are spending a ton to beef up security in local and state agencies. Webappsec is certainly not going to get the lion's share of cash, but it'll get some. I wish I had better news for you.

You should sign up to this mailing list http://attrition.org/security/dataloss.html its pretty handy to know about breaches occurring. Because of it I found out my eye insurance company had used some subcontractor which has lost customer information which included social security numbers. You'll be surprises how common these breaches are, only the big ones make the news, but breaches as simple as documents with sensitive info being found in dumpster slip through the news. Another nice site is http://www.pogowasright.org/

I agree I am sick and tired of information being shared, not protected, or just improperly disposed of. I'm sure almost everyone in this country has their information breached in some way, many are covered up or are never discovered.

Thanks for the sites. Hopefully they can get some of these loopholes taken care of. It really just amazes me that I can go view accident reports online and take advantage of someone who is already having a bad day as it is.
